The exact date of each deadline changes every year, so head to the UCAS website to add them to your diary. Here’s a rough guide of the dates you might want to make a note of, depending on where and what your child applies for.

The application deadline for Oxford and Cambridge is in October, much earlier than most other universities, as are the deadlines for applicants wishing to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.

Most other courses need to be applied for by mid-January, although for some art and design courses, the date may be in March.

UCAS Extra, which is a tool for students who don’t receive any offers from their chosen universities, runs from late February until July.

If your child receives offers, but on Results Day doesn’t achieve the grades needed, they will be entered into Clearing, where they can apply to other universities. All Clearing applications must be made by the specified date in October.

Your child’s school or college may set its own deadlines as well.

We don’t need to tell you how important it is that your child is prepared for these deadlines, so to be completely clear about when they are, visit the UCAS website.
